Numerology is the study of numbers and the relationship between numbers and certain characteristics of an individual's personality. The earliest and most original intellectual discovery of Man is the concept of numbers. The set of numbers from 1 to 9 which was complemented by the most unique concept of zero which is the contribution of ancient Indian philosophers to the world. With numbers came Mathematics which is essentially an abstract concept and Mathematics then invaded all branches of human knowledge and strengthened it and also made it possible to develop the applied sciences which then can be used for the improvement and upliftment of human life in general.

Numbers have no real or physical significance. It is a symbol only. Using these symbols all mysteries of nature can be revealed. The art and science of numerology has evolved in all ancient civilization- Ancient Egyptian civilization or Mayan civilization. The kavala numbers in ancient Jewish civilization have all developed there own numerology science. The Vedic philosophers used the concept of magic squares to create numeric Yantras for different rituals and prescriptions. Based on all these ancient knowledge, the modern numerology science has evolved during the 19th century and early 20th century. The common philosophical concepts behind Numerology are as follows:

Vedic Astrology is the study of positions of heavenly bodies like Sun, Moon, Mars etc. with respect to the zodiac and the interpretation of the effect of such heavenly bodies on the events in the life of an individual or a country or the whole world. It is called Vedic Astrology, because the principles on which the study and interpretations are made were first enumerated in the 'Vedas' - the first treatise of ancient Hindu philosophy.

What is Zodiac?

If we imagine a path in the sky at approximately 18 degrees arc in the width encircling the earth in an east west direction, groups of stars will appear to be apparently fixed with respect to earth along this imaginary path. There are 27 groups of stars in the path which are recognized by Vedic Astrology. These groups of stars in the imaginary path are called zodiac. This zodiac forms the reference for fixing up the position of any planet or star in the sky. Since this zodiac is encircling the earth it can be measured as 360 degrees, where these 27 groups of stars are evenly placed, hence each of them have a span of 360 degrees/27 = 13 degrees 20' arc.

What are Zodiac Signs or Rashis?

When the zodiac is divided into 12 equal parts each having a span of 30 degrees arc, then each of this arc is called a zodiac sign. A sign, therefore, will consist of 2 ¼ groups of stars. A particular group of stars called Ashwini, in the zodiac is considered the starting point of the zodiac and is called the star no.1. Similarly, there are individual name for the 26 group of stars. Ashwini (1), Bharini (2), Krittika (3) are the first three stars in the zodiac. As stated earlier, the first span of 30 degrees arc in the zodiac will consist of Ashwini, Bharini and ¼ of Krittika constitute the first zodiac sign called 'Aries'. The name of the remaining 11 zodiac signs after 'Aries' are: Taurus (2), Gemini (3), Cancer (4), Leo (5), Virgo (6), Libra (7), Scorpio (8), Sagittarius (9), Capricorn (10), Aquarius (11) and Pisces (12).

What are Rahu and Ketu?

Moon's apparent path around the earth intersects the ecliptic obliquely at two points called the 'Nodes'. The point where the Moon crosses the ecliptic from south to north is called the ascending node or 'Rahu' when it crosses the ecliptic from north to south is called the descending node or 'Ketu'. These 2 points are 6 zodiac signs or 180 degrees apart. The positions of these two points with respect to zodiac signs are of equal importance to position of other planets with respect to zodiac sign in Vedic astrology.

What is Ascendant/Rising Sign?

The ecliptic passes through the center of the zodiacal belt which extends 9 degrees on its either (north or south) side. The planets remain within the limits of the zodiac. The earth rotates around its axis once in twenty- four hours from west to east. As a consequence, all planets appear to revolve around the earth from east to west once in twenty four hours. The zodiac with its stars and signs fixed upon it also appears to revolve around the earth from east to west once in every 24 hours. Thus, all points on signs and stars on the zodiac will appear to successfully rise in the eastern horizon and set at the western horizon once in 24 hours. Thus, for every point and time on earth there will be a unique point on a particular zodiac sign which will be rising at the eastern horizon.
When an individual is born, the point in the particular zodiac sign, expressed in longitude, which is rising at the eastern horizon at the exact time of his/her birth for the exact latitude/longitude of the place where he/she is born is the unique space time coordinate for the individual. This is called the individual's Ascendant (Lagna) or the Rising Sign.

What is Janma Rashi/ Moon Sign/Moon Ascendant?

In Vedic Astrology, the exact position of the Moon at the exact time of birth with respect to the zodiac sign and the point in the zodiac sign expressed in longitudes will be Janma Rashi/ Moon Sign/ Moon Ascendant.

What is Sun Sign/ Sun Ascendant?

Like the Moon sign, the longitude of Sun with respect to zodiac at the exact time of birth is the Sun Sign of the individual. Western astrology lays great importance on Sun signs and ALL YOUR ZODIAC SIGNS are your Sun signs as per Vedic astrology. The Sun sign on the basis of Western astrology and Vedic Astrology will differ by one sign many a times. This is because as per Western astrology the zodiac is also moving, whereas, the Vedic astrologers consider the zodiacs to be fixed. The reason why this difference comes will be explained on the web page at a later date. Meanwhile, we are just mentioning this so that you do not get alarmed to see the difference in the zodiac sun signs when computed by the Vedic astrology.

Importance of Birth Chart

The Sanskrit for Horoscope is “Kundali”. The birth chart or natal chart in Sanskrit is then called “Janma Kundali”. By definition a horoscope depicts the position of all the planets in heaven for given date, time and sun sign. This date and time is critical because planets are in constant motion and their positions are continuously changing. The horoscope indicates the position of each planet with respect to the 12 zodiac signs. Each Zodiac sign represents 30 degrees of movement for each planet and the 12 Zodiac signs represent 360 degrees movement of each planet. Each planet moves at different speeds and at varying speeds each day. We also do the Astrology sign compatibility so that you can know how compatible you are with your loved ones. Moon is the fastest moving planet, and it takes approximately two and half days to travel through each Zodiac sign.

Ascendant or Lagna

Saturn is the slowest planet among Vedic astrology planets. It takes approximately 2^1/2 to complete its movement through one zodiac sign. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are even slower than Saturn. Apart from the position of each planet, the other most important parameter of the chart is called Ascendant or “Lagna” in Sanskrit. This is referred to as a point in a particular zodiac sign represented by a longitude expressed in degree, minutes and second and it is computed based on the exact Latitude/Longitude of the place where the particular person is born.

Every place on the surface of the earth has a unique ascendant sign and ascendant degree among the 12 zodiac signs at any given date and time of birth. The Ascendant point signifies the exact eastern horizon at the exact date, time and place of birth of a person. This is the unique space and time signature of a person. The Ascendant sign in the chart is also known as the first house of the chart. Every other sign in the zodiac then becomes the other houses in the chart in the anticlockwise direction. If the Ascendant sign is Aries in a horoscope chart, then the next zodiac sign in the anticlockwise direction is Taurus. Taurus will be considered as 2nd house in the chart. Similarly each of the 12 zodiac signs will then represent 12 houses in the chart. So the natal horoscope chart signifies the individual planet positions in different zodiac signs and the ascendant and 12 houses in the chart based on the date, time and place of birth. This is the permanent chart of an individual, which does not change as the birth details do not change.

Dasha Chart

Every birth chart has a dasha chart, which starts from the date and time of birth and is unique for every individual. This uniqueness comes from the start of the Dasha system for the person. A person's Dasha system can start from any point within the sequence described above. Once the starting point is computed from the birth chart, then it must follow the sequence given above. This starting point is not chosen at random but it follows a definite mathematical logic and is computed from the exact longitude and zodiac sign where Moon is located in the natal horoscope chart.

To analyze smaller time durations in a person's life, the Dasha system (Planet Main Period) can be further sub-divided into Antar Dasha (sub-period) or it can be further divided into 3^rd level of Pratyantar Dasha (sub-sub periods). Theoretically we can create charts even to 5th level covering few hours of a person's life, which is called Sukshma Dasha.

However it is not reliable or practical to create a chart beyond 3^rd level as mentioned above because our birth time is never totally accurate, and even if a person has clear birth time recorded at the time of birth, the associated error will be exotically reflected beyond 3^rd level and no reliable analysis can be done. Besides there are different opinions among Vedic astrologers on which moment during birth constitutes the actual birth time. I am not going to such controversies in this article. The dasha system reflects that planets deliver their natal promises during their period, sub-period and sub-sub periods as per the person's chart.

The birth chart becomes the main tool in the hands of an astrologer to predict when and what events will take place in a person's life.

Astrology and Karma

All about Karma.

What is Karma? The best meaning of the word which captures its essential spirit has been given by the great saint Paramhansha Yogananda. I am quoting from his famous book ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’.

“Fate, Karma, destiny-call it what you may- there is a law of justice which somehow but not by chance determines our race, our physical structure and some of our mental and emotional traits. The important thing to realize is that while we may not escape our own basic pattern we can work in conformity with it. That is where free will comes in. we are free to choose and discriminate to the limits of our understanding, and as we rightly exercise our power of choice, our understanding grows. Then, once having chosen, a man has to accept the consequences of his choice and go on from there.” Does it not sound very similar to Newton’s third law of motion: “To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”

The theory of Karma recognizes 3 kinds of Karma in our life. They are as follows:

a) “Sanchit Karma”- The good and bad Karma that we inherit from our past lives in this life.
b) “Praravdha Karma”- The net balance of good and bad Karma which we inherit from past lives in this life which we must experience in this life
c) “Kriyaman Karma”- The good and bad karma that we have earned from action in this life itself at any given point of time.

Out of these 3 Karmas, the a and c Karma types and their effects can be neutralized by present good and bad karmas in this life itself. But the net effect of Praravdha Karmas whether it is good or bad have to be experienced in this life itself. This theory of Karma does not accept that our life is totally predestined, our free will and the choices that we make at critical junctures in our life also play an equally important part. Hence it is not correct to say that whatever is supposed to happen is going to happen in our life and we are just hapless puppets dancing under the strings of our fate or destiny. If there was no choice and everything that happens in our life was predestined, then astrology or astrological predictions would have no relevance in human civilization.

The Horoscope: The position of planets in different signs and houses and the strengths of different planets and houses in our natal chart reflect the Praravdha Karma and the pre-destined events in our life. These are also called “Drirah” or Fixed Karma or fixed results in our life, which an astrologer will analyze from a person’s natal chart and can also predict when they are likely to happen by analyzing the Dasha system.

But there are another kind of Karma, which consists of “Sanchit Karma” and “Kriyaman Karma” These are called Adrirah Karma or probable Karma and they are not predetermined. Astrologer can make a forecast only by analyzing the divisional charts computed from natal charts as well as by analyzing the transit status of each planet and what relationship the transit planets are forming with the planets in the natal chart. This forecast can only talk about probable events and whether a particular planet is supporting or challenging. However the actual event in a person’s life will really be based on the choices that a person makes based on his/her free will.
A person can then shape his own destiny between his fixed destiny and probable destiny by exercising his free will.

I shall end this by again quoting the immortal words of Paramhansha Yogananda from his Autobiography of a Yogi, which clearly brings into perspective the role of astrology and Karma in our life, “A child is born on that day and at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with his individual Karma, his horoscope is a challenging portrait, revealing his unalterable past and its probable future results. But the natal chart can be rightly interpreted only by men of intuitive wisdom; these are few.”

The truly wise man however shapes his own destiny:

Quoting from Yogananda:

“Occasionally I told astrologers to select my worse periods, according to planetary indications, and I would still accomplish whatever task I set myself. It is true that my success at such time has been accompanied by extraordinary difficulties. But my conviction has always been justified; faith in the divine protection, and the right use of man’s God-given will, are forces formidable beyond any other.”

Difference between Vedic Astrology & Western Astrology Systems

The Zodiac is an imaginary ring in the sky which encircles our solar system like a girdle. To determine the positions of the planets on this circle we need some reference point, a point which will remain fixed while the heavenly bodies keep moving.The seers of Vedic Astrology took a faraway star which remains stationary and the position of the planets were determined by referring them to this fixed star cluster. This is known as the sidereal system. Sidereal means measured by stars. The fixed star cluster chosen for the purpose is taken as the 1st degree of Aries, the starting point of the Indian Zodiac.The Western system also uses a fixed reference point but utilises the equinoxes for the purpose. Interestingly, 1st degree of Aries is yet again the starting point of the Western Zodiac. But the major difference is that the position of the Sun on Vernal equinox (the first day of spring) is taken as the 1st degree of Aries. This works equally well because the Sun moves 360° in a year. This is known as the Tropical Zodiac.Taking two different reference points does not make one system valid and the other invalid. In fact, one can be mathematically deduced from the other. Ancient Indians were aware of this. They knew that, because of the perpetual titling of the earth the equinoxes moved approximately 1° in every 72 years. So, they introduced the idea of 'Ayanamsha' to accommodate the procession of the equinoxes (Ayanchalan).Hence, the Western Tropical Zodiac is called 'Sayan' (with Ayan) i.e., with the procession of equinoxes and the Sidereal Zodiac is called 'Nirayan' (without Ayan) where this is ignored.The planets and the houses in both systems are the same. There are some differences in approach. For example, in Indian Astrology the most important reference point in a Horoscope is the 1st house known as Ascendant while in the Western System the Sun occupies the central place.
